Description
An exquisite fine art edition of St John's Gospel, illuminated by artist-calligrapher Jane Sullivan. Inspired by Celtic art and the beautiful illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages, this is a prayerful and sometimes playful piece of art as well as a unique presentation of this sacred text.
Following the majestic King James Version, the Gospel is beautifully handwritten in traditional calligraphic script, and richly illuminated with original illustrations throughout. A year in the making, the Gospel's every page is copiously illustrated and represents a display of reverence for the text.
As a 21st-century artist, Jane Sullivan brings together the medieval and the modern, using high-quality gouaches, inks and paper, to create the finished book, which is carefully printed on high-grade wove paper. The result is a book to delight both eye and soul, inviting all to discover, or rediscover, this most mystical of the Gospels.
About the Artist:
Jane Sullivan is an artist and calligrapher living and working in Poitou in France. Her fascination with lettering and the art of illumination began in childhood and she has spent her whole life refining and developing her own style of this slow and detailed art, inspired by her medieval forebears but blending this tradition with modern fashions.
Jane creates her own original designs using imagination and creativity, and that is what is presented here.
Born in Los Angeles, Jane studied Fine Art at Mount Saint Mary’s College and at the Otis Art Institute. Following her Irish roots over the seas, she spent time in Cork, Ireland, studying medieval manuscripts and Insular palaeography. Later, as a Visiting Scholar at Cambridge University, Jane’s study of the pages penned by Insular and Continental Scribes of the early Middle Ages convinced her to develop her own unique creations and style, combining her fascination of historical scripts with her love of fantastical illustrations. She has published books on lettering, illumination, and Celtic art, as well as a Psalter showcasing her own style. This Gospel is a beautiful display of her artistic talent, combining her many years of research with her own creative approach to the art of Illumination and reverence for the Holy text.
